Eastern Woman in Iowa Lottery Won $50,000 Prize So She Rubbed Her Eyes a Couple of Times With Surprise
Kathryn Borden, a 44-year-old retail manager, recently claimed the second-highest prize of $50,000 in the Iowa Lottery’s MONOPOLY 20X scratch game.
Borden recounted her initial disbelief at the Iowa Lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids: “At first, I thought I’d won just another $5.” However, as she continued scratching, the zeros multiplied, creating a surreal moment. She had purchased her winning ticket at Casey’s on 130 41st Ave. Drive SW and scratched it at home.
The sudden realization of her newfound wealth left her momentarily speechless. “I just sat there, frozen, for a good 15 seconds,” she shared. “I even rubbed my eyes a couple of times to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Finally, I called my kids over and said, ‘You guys, I think I just won $50,000!’”
Borden plans to use the prize money to finally retire some debt, get a new car, and put some money away for the future.”
